When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.
When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.
Time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.
There you can be sure
you are not beyond love.
The dark will be your womb
tonight.
The night will give you a horizon
further than you can see.
You must learn one thing.
The world was meant to be free in.
Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.
Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn
anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive
is too small for you.
Sweet Darkness by David Whyte
What a neat enso! “Cheeky” comes to mind. Glad you introduced me to David Whyte – he’s on my bookshelf now!
Cheeky indeed! I gave this one to my sangha friend who has moved away (sniff, sniff). It certainly captured her energy and fortitude. Glad you love Whyte. You do know Walcott?
Not yet! π
The end of that poem reminds me of once reading “Never buy anything that doesn’t make you want to do a little dance of delight.”
I used to tell my daughter that I wasn’t about to buy something that didn’t leap off the shelf and sing and dance for me. I like your version better! π
As always, such poignant art and poetry π “what does not bring you alive is too small for you” – Can I say Amen sister – you who have recently inspired me to be alive with creativity! π
You are precious and wonderful, Christine!
And you are too, Dear Genju, you are too. I hope you truly *know* that… Heart Hugs always, C
How precious?…How precious!…How precious…Yes…a deep, silent ‘Amen’… Thank You Dear Genju.
