sweet darkness

When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.

When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.

Time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.

There you can be sure
you are not beyond love.

The dark will be your womb

The night will give you a horizon
further than you can see.

You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn

anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

  1. Thank you, Christine & Nathan. Nathan, I’d violate a number of precepts freely to sit at the feet of Whyte and Walcott. They give Rilke a run for his money! 😉

  2. Oh… wonderful poem and a great site to visit everyday!
I too have my wordpress blog where I have translated many Zen & Tao stories. You are doing a great work. Thank you.

    • Hello, Nishant! Thank you for your kindness. I just visited your site and found it lovely too. Wish I read Hindi…. Please share your views here. It would be interesting to have a perspective different from a Western interpretation of zen & tao stories.

      • Thank you, dear Genju for a very quick reply. At the moment I can only tell you that I have a very basic knowledge of Buddhism and Zen. As for my interpretation of Zen and Tao stories, I am still learning to read between the lines.

        • At least you found out there are lines to read between. 😉

We are all beginners and stumbling along – at least around here. For the more sublime and erudite scholars, I fear you will have to look elsewhere.

Welcome anyway, Nishant, and enjoy the tea!
